Using a fluorescence cell involves using a beam of light, usually ultraviolet light, that excites the electrons in molecules of certain compounds and causes them to emit light; typically, but not necessarily, visible light. Fluorescence spectroscopy is used in, among others, biochemical, medical, and chemical research fields for analyzing organic compounds. There have also been reports of its use in differentiating malignant, bashful skin tumors from benign. With fluorescence, a light source emits light of an excitation wavelength that is relevant to the compound to be measured. Fluorescence produces specific excitation and emission wavelengths by using optical filters. The filter blocks other wavelengths but transmits wavelengths relevant to the compound. The light passes through the sample to be measured, and a certain wavelength is absorbed while a longer wavelength is emitted. The emitted light is measured by a detector. By changing the optical filter, different substances can be measured.
The difference between a spectrophotometer cuvet and fluorescence cell is that a spectrophotometer cell only has two sides polished, where-as fluorescence cell has three or four sides polished.
To receive the best results from working with measurements, laboratories must have a cuvet that is capable of handling the job. Since samples are particularly expensive, not just any Fluorescence cell can be used.
