NV Legislature convenes with Brooks in focus

Posted: Updated:

The clock starts ticking on a 120-day session as the Nevada Legislature begins in Carson City.

The Assembly and Senate are set to convene at 11 a.m. Monday.

Opening day is typically reserved for accolades, speeches and introductions before lawmakers buckle down to tackle the state's business - a task that must be completed by midnight June 3.

But the 77th session will begin as no other in state history. 1 of the first orders of business will be appointment in the Assembly of a select committee to recommend whether Democratic Assemblyman Steven Brooks of North Las Vegas is fit to serve.

Brooks was arrested Jan. 19, accused of threatening incoming Speaker Marilyn Kirkpatrick. He was hospitalized last week for a mental evaluation and says he will take his seat.
