Homeowner recalls shooting bank robber in backyard

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

Mark Schwendener recalls how within minutes his family's security was jeopardized when he says a stranger was lurking around his valley home.

"He was coming this way. My family was screaming and crying. My daughter was screaming and freaking out because she didn't want me to go outside with a gun. I was like I don't want him to come into the house," said Schwendener.

"I could see him through the curtains. I could see something moving back there and I saw him running," added Schwendener.

Mark grabbed a personal firearm from his car and searched around the home for the suspect. Within seconds they crossed paths.

"His face was face to face. He had a bag of cash in one hand. I had my guy and I reached out, pointed and shot twice here," added Schwendener.

The suspect went into the backyard and that's when the valley resident took charge.

"I went out and shot him a couple of times from here and he fell down," added Schwendener.

At that moment, Metro officers moved in, shot the suspect and were able to make an arrest. According to Metro police, the suspect had been on the run after robbing a nearby US Bank with two handguns.

"We were all relaxing on a Saturday, I was cleaning my office, my wife was cleaning the house. Next thing you know there was gunfire and helicopters and a war zone out there," added Schwendener.
