Goodman: Koch a 'man of the people'

Posted: Updated:

Former Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman acknowledged the passing of former New York City Mayor Ed Koch on Friday, saying he "tried to pattern much of my philosophy after [Koch]."

In a statement to FOX5, Goodman commended Koch as a "gentle man who loved his city."

The 88-year-old Koch died Friday of congestive heart failure. A former congressman, Koch served three terms as New York City's mayor, from 1978-1989.

Like Koch, Goodman was a three-term mayor who enjoyed tremendous popularity even after his tenure in office.

The self-proclaimed "happiest mayor in the universe" said Friday that Koch was "A man of the 'people' and always asked them 'How am I doing?'"

"In his book there was a colloquies between him and Roman Catholic prelate, where the prayer observes that during tough economic times, projects on the drawing board would have to be completed or else future generations would be deprived of that to which they were entitled,"Goodman's statement continued. "That always stuck with me in the way I approached my mayoral responsibilities."
