Candlelight vigil held for murdered family

Posted: Updated:

Neighbors lit candles and laid out some of the favorite things of three people brutally murdered in their own home, allegedly by a family member.

Police believe Jim McCarty shot and killed his wife Linda and his two stepchildren, Bobby and Bonnie Scherrer, Tuesday night as well as the family dog before turning the gun on himself in an unsuccessful suicide attempt.

"There was a lot of what you would call gruesomeness there," said Bill Cassell, of Metro. "Certainly a horrible crime scene."

People in the neighborhood describe the family as friendly.

Andrew Newkirk saw Jim McCarty just before the shooting and said everything seemed normal.

"I said 'hi' to him and he went in his house and I went in mine and 20 minutes later is when it all took place," Newkirk said.

Friends speculate that medical issues could have put a strain on the family.

"I really feel Jim snapped," said neighbor Josie Montgomery. "He had the bout with cancer, his wife had the stroke and he's the only one working. The kids are taking care of their mom. It's just so sad. It's like we're all in mourning. These are neighbors we've known since 1987. It's just heartbreaking."

Metro says Jim McCarty is still at UMC and has been unable to talk to investigators but is expected to survive.

He will be booked in absentia and police will guard him at the hospital until he is released. Then he will head straight to jail.

Jim McCarty faces three counts of murder with a deadly weapon.
