Deadline to apply for Metro reserve officer program Friday

Posted: Updated:

The last day to apply for Las Vegas Metro police Volunteer Reserve Police Officer program is Friday at midnight.

To apply, visit the employment page at

Metro said the program offers a chance for concerned citizens to work and train alongside officers.

Officer Jose Hernandez says due to a hiring freeze, the department is short about 100 officers but hopes to find up to 800 volunteers who will work for free.

"When you have less officers, the response time begins to suffer. We see perhaps in some areas crime will start to increase," said Hernandez.

The position is unpaid and requires you volunteer a minimum of 20 hours a month. You may work in any of Metro's patrol areas.

Applicants will undergo a background check similar to what a candidate for officer would. Once that's complete, applicants will participate in a 420-hour academy and a 200-hour field training program.

After that, the volunteers will be armed and uniformed, assisting paid officers on regular police calls.
