If your goal in 2013 is to become more financially stable, a check of unclaimed property records can help you on your way.
A CNN-Money article reports about $58 billion remain to be unclaimed in the United States.
According to the article, the property stems from abandoned bank accounts, stock holdings, unclaimed life insurance payouts and forgotten pension benefits. Federal and state governments, along with banks and other financial institutions, hold the cash.
Millions of people are eligible for possible payouts of millions of dollars.
The CNN article cites a case in Connecticut where someone had $700,000 in unclaimed assets.
The Nevada Treasurer's office maintains a website where you can search for any unclaimed money by using your name. You can access that at nevadatreasurer.gov/UPSearch/Index.aspx?ID=Search.
Of course, if you lived elsewhere other than Nevada, you can seek a payout in other states by going to www.unclaimed.org.
