Readers of the Las Vegas Review-Journal on Friday were met with the front page photo of embattled Nevada lawmaker Steven Brooks…without a shirt.
The photo in the Friday edition of the newspaper shows Assemblyman Brooks with his arms spread at his sides while wearing a cap.
The bizarre display was part of an interview Brooks gave to the R-J on Thursday detailing the last several weeks, which included his arrest for threatening Assembly Speaker Marilyn Kirkpatrick.
According to an arrest report, the threats weren't made directly to Kirkpatrick; rather, they were relayed by other lawmakers.
Brooks was taken into custody on Jan. 19 by North Las Vegas police at Carey Avenue and Mt. Hood Street in what police described as a felony high-risk car stop.
Police located a .357 Smith & Wesson handgun inside Brooks' rental car along with a box of ammunition. According to the report, Brooks told police he had the gun because he had been at an NRA shooting event earlier in the day. The story was contradicted by a Nevada State Legislative police officer.
The report claims that Brooks' relatives told police that Brooks had called Las Vegas Councilman Ricki Barlow earlier in the day and told him that he had a loaded gun and may harm Kirkpatrick. Brooks further allegedly told Barlow that he was not afraid to die and was willing to have a shootout with police.
When police spoke with Kirkpatrick, she said Nevada State Sen. Kelvin Atkinson had called her earlier in the day, claiming an unknown person told him that Brooks is driving around with a gun, looking to harm her. She also said that Brooks on several prior occasions told her that she had ruined his life by becoming speaker and that when she took over as speaker, that would be her last day as speaker.
The report also claims Kirkpatrick told police she had learned Brooks earlier in the day called Legislature police, saying he needed protection because his life was in danger.
Brooks was scheduled to meet with the media in Carson City on Tuesday, but he never showed. Instead, he was hospitalized in Las Vegas for internal bleeding.
Brooks is scheduled to appear in court on Monday.
