A Las Vegas man and previously convicted felon received a life sentence with the possibility of parole on Wednesday for the slaying of his former roommate.

According to an arrest report, on Dec. 11, 2011, Kevin Banks, 32, armed himself with a handgun to confront the victim, Carl Owens, at an apartment on F Street near Washington Avenue.

Banks had recently been kicked out of the apartment.

When a woman inside the apartment refused to let Banks in, he started shooting. Owens was shot in the head and died.

Banks escaped in a car driven by his girlfriend, Yvette Thirsty, police said.

Banks was arrested and charged with murder with a deadly weapon, discharge of a firearm into an occupied structure, and prohibited possession of a firearm.

Thirsty was charged with accessory to murder.

Banks was convicted in 2006 for assault with a deadly weapon and possession of a controlled substance with the intent to sell.
