Police: Fight with neighbors led to Vegas slaying

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

A Las Vegas man charged in a slaying said, in an arrest report, it stemmed from a dispute over drugs with a neighbor.

Nerio Nava was arrested Sunday after a man had died at an apartment complex in the 3700 block of Wynn Road, according to Las Vegas Metro police.

In the arrest report, Nava described the stabbing involving a neighbor who sold him and his brother marijuana last month. Nava and his brother Omar Arrieta felt they were shorted in a drug deal with Lawrance Velasquez, the arrest report showed.

The two parties nearly came to blows in the December deal, Nava told police in the report.

On Jan. 20, Arrieta was confronted by Velasquez's partner, Ricardo Ruiz, and he challenged him to a fight, according to police. The fight involved at least three other associates of Ruiz, including Velasquez, the police report described.

In the arrest report, when Arrieta was double teamed in the fight, Nava retrieved a kitchen knife and stabbed Ruiz in the back. When the struggle flared up again, Nava, in the arrest report, stabbed Velasquez at least twice.

The police report said the two brothers went back to their apartment and contacted authorities.

Police said Velasquez, who was lying in front of the brothers' apartment, died at the scene. Ruiz was taken and treated at University Medical Center.

Nava was booked into the Clark County Detention Center on counts of murder with a deadly weapon and attempted murder with a deadly weapon.

Nava was scheduled to appear in a Las Vegas court room Wednesday for a preliminary hearing.
