The UNLV Rebel Girls danced as one, knocking off top colleges to win the 2013 College Dance Team National Championships.
It was the team's first national team championship title, having previously placed in the top five in the past. The competition was held this past weekend in Orlando, FL, at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Center.
"I'm thrilled with my team," said head coach Marca Decastroverde. "They are so deserving of this championship. They have been focused since the day we left nationals last year and worked hard all summer."
The team also placed third in the pom routine, right behind Minnesota and Cincinnati.
"With the support of our UNLV students, student athletes, community and administration, we rose to the challenge and nailed it in the end," DeCastroverde said.
The team placed fifth in the hip hop competition last year and failed to make the finals in pom, making this year's win especially gratifying.
"We kept our priorities," senior Erin Bush said. "Get good grades, be a good person and work hard. Practice hard. And in the end, it paid off. We are proud to be Rebels."
The finals will air on ESPN in the coming weeks.
The final results are as follows:
University of Nevada, Las Vegas
University of Cincinnati
University of Memphis
Arizona State University
University of Kentucky
University of Tennessee
Florida State University
University of Kansas
University of Oklahoma
