LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -
A Pahrump businessman says he's the target of a smear campaign that's costing the town new jobs.
Rene Morales wants to build a new landfill for Nye County but he says someone is trying to turn the town against him.
Morales wants to turn a 30-acre piece of land into a landfill which he says will help the county with a coming problem.
"Right now the local landfill is reaching their maximum capacity. They don't have a plan B. In five years where are they going to dump their trash? I can be their second option," Rene Morales said.
A 35-year ongoing project, Morales bought the property from a local contractor. He says that all the requirements needed by the county have been met.
"I am properly zoned. I have commercial water, commercial power. I have a paved road all the way to my facility. It meets all the criteria. All I am asking for is for a CUP," added Morales.
That CUP, or conditional use permit, will allow a private municipal solid waste landfill on property in the heavy industrial zoning district.
A permit Morales claims the Nye County Department of Planning won't give him.
On Monday afternoon, anonymous robocalls went out to Pahrump residents advising them to protest Morales' request to open the landfill on East Simkins Road.
Regional Planning Commission Board Member Bob King told the Pahrump Valley Times that Morales needs to provide more specific details on the design of the landfill.
"I proposed in a contract to the town of Pahrump that I am willing to donate 2.5 percent to the community, to the parks and recreations and 2.5 percent back to the school district. A total of 5 net of my net profits," added Morales.
