LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

Las Vegas city officials are poised to approve a plan that would allow more free parking spaces and the replacement of outdated parking meters in downtown.

The city council is expected to hear a proposal on Wednesday to remove the outdated meters with those that accept credit and debit cards as well as coins.

The proposal will also allow for the removal of 111 metered-spaces in downtown, which should create more free parking opportunities, the city said.

The city said the new meters will also allow people to use mobile applications to locate available parking spaces in real-time.

Las Vegas officials said funding for the $1.45 million parking project comes from a Parking Enterprise Fund separate from the city's general fund.

The proposal is scheduled to be heard in City Hall council chambers at about 8:30 a.m.
