LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

Nevada ranks among the worst in the nation when it comes to illicit drug use, currently in the worst 10 states according to the most recent National Survey on Drug Use and Health. According to the study 9.35 percent of Nevada residents use illicit drugs.

Desert Hope is the new, 78,000 square foot facility at 2465 East Twain Avenue which features 148 beds in their state-of-the-art treatment center. The new facility opened in early January and is now the biggest substance abuse facility in the valley.

The center is run by American Addiction Centers who run five other treatment centers across the country. Their Chairman, Michael Cartwright, is a former addict and now author of the book "Believable Hope." He said Vegas seemed like a natural fit for this new center.

"People have gambling issues, sex addiction issues, internet issues. It's really when you think of it in the U.S. it's truly the process addiction capitol of the world. We thought this would be an ideal place to open up a treatment center."

Cartwright says if the warning signs are pointing to a loved one who may have a substance abuse issue that you need to have a conversation.

"If you have a loved one you're worried about, sit down with them, talk to them about it. But also bring in a professional. There are interventionists out there that can help you navigate that conversation with your loved one," Cartwright said.
