Kali, a 4-year old chocolate lab, is credited with saving her owner's life, and now two veterinary offices are fighting to save her life.
Dr. Linda Ingle, Clermont Veterinary Hospital, was working when the dog's owner rushed Kali in for help 10 days ago.
"An explosion occurred in the shed. The dog was in the shed basically to be kept safe at night, and alarmed the owner. If she had not alarmed the owners and woke them up, the house would have been on fire and the family would have been involved," said Ingle.
When Kali came in, Ingle could only see a burn on the pup's nose. She realized the injuries were much worse than they appeared as already almost 40percent of her body was covered in thermal burns.
"In a thermal burn, you are actually being cooked," said Ingle.
Kali's owner did not want to talk on camera, but the vet staff said he loves her and regularly comes to visit her. She is also getting plenty of love between the two vet offices that are taking care of her.
Dr. Marie Lance, Lance Animal Hospital, offered to treat Kali several times a week. Her office offers nontraditional treatments for animals, not available at many veterinary practices.
She was treating Kali with cold laser therapy Friday. "This is helping the tissue heal. It's helping with inflammation," said Lance.
"She's gone through a horrible, horrible thing, but (her) spirit is good and I think she is very special," said Lance.
Both vets said they are optimistic about Kali's recovery. Dr. Ingle admitted dogs with severe burns like what Kali sustained are usually put down, but because of her spirit they are fighting to save her.
"This dog has now even shown that it's had a bad day and is happy to be here," said Ingle.
Ingle said a very elderly man owned Kali and didn't want to give her up. But, he surrendered ownership because of how much Kali's care costs now and will also cost when she gets better. The vets estimate it will cost more than $10,000 for her to recover.
Ingle also said the elderly man would be unable to take care of Kali's special needs when she heals. Kali already has a home to go to when she no longer needs round-the-clock medical care.
