Confirmed cases of the flu in Nevada are up 57 percent from just two weeks ago. If you've been putting immunization off, the time to get vaccinated is now.
Nevada, like most of the country, is experiencing high levels of influenza-like activity, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC)
"We want people to know it's still not too late to get vaccinated but the clock is ticking and there is more of an urgency to get a vaccine right away in order to protect yourself," said Heidi Parker, executive director of Immunize Nevada. "The vaccine takes about two weeks to protect against prevalent flu strains, and the flu season will continue for the next few months. Vaccination is the single best way to protect yourself and everyone around you from the flu."
In addition to getting immunized, the CDC recommends preventative measures such as hand washing and correct usage of doctor-recommended antiviral drugs.
There are numerous places in Nevada to get a low-cost or free flu shot. For a complete list, visit InfluenceNevada.org.
To encourage immunization, Immunize Nevada has launched a Facebook photo contest called Give Us Your Best Shot. You're encouraged to take a picture of yourself or your loved ones getting the flu vaccine and then upload it to Facebook.com/ImmunizeNevada.
You may submit the photo in one of six categories: family, teens, seniors, pregnant, best Nevada sports fan and best Nevada workplace. One submission from each category will receive a Visa gift card worth $150.
