LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -
A Las Vegas father who escaped a burning mobile home while his child perished pleaded not guilty Wednesday.
Shane Gouailhardou, 22, appeared in Las Vegas Justice Court several weeks after a grand jury indicted him with second-degree murder and child neglect charges.
He and girlfriend Amy Hatzenfiller, 26, were accused of fleeing a home that was burning in flames without saving their children on June 15, 2012.
Gouailhardou's 2-year-old son David and Hatzenfiller's two children – Skylar Lafia, 2, and Aryana Lafia, 1 – were identified as those who died in the fire, according to authorities.
The indictment alleges the mobile home where the fire broke out did not have fire extinguishers and there were no clear escape routes for the children. It's also alleged that the couple took meth prior to the fire.
Authorities did not conclusively say what caused the fire, but it may have been started by a lit cigarette or children playing with matches, investigators said.
A status check for Gouailhardou was slated for Feb. 20. A tentative trial date was also slated for Feb. 25.
