LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

Ten-year-old Jade Morris, who was found slain in a dirt lot last month, was laid to rest Wednesday.

The girl's memorial service took place at 1 p.m. at Bread of Life Ministries. The memorial was open to the community.

Hundreds donned purple ribbons and monarch butterflies, a favorite of Jade, to honor her life.

Those who knew the little girl said she lived life to the fullest, was an honor-roll student and spent much of her time reading books, researching bugs and writing her own stories.

Jade's biggest passion, however, was singing, especially jazz. Jazz and gospel singers performed during Wednesday's ceremony.

Among those gathered were family members from across the country, Jade's vocal coach and classmates and teachers from her school, Wasden Elementary School.

The little girl's family is still reeling from her death.

"My baby Jade was never angry and she wouldn't want that for me so I'm not angry anymore. I'm more just disappointed in her (suspect Brenda Stokes) and I just love and miss my baby tremendously," said Jade's father, Philip Morris.

Following the service, attendees gathered at Jade's grandfather's barbecue restaurant in Henderson, where the little girl spent the last night of her life listening to jazz music with family.

Authorities said Jade was found dead in North Las Vegas on Dec. 27 after going missing for nearly a week.

According to Las Vegas Metro police, Jade was last seen being picked up by family friend Brenda Stokes on Dec. 21. Later that day, Stokes was arrested for, what police said, was an attack on a co-worker at Bellagio hotel-casino, where she worked as a gaming dealer.

Stokes, who was the girlfriend of Jade's father, was charged for the attack but, posed with questions about the girl's disappearance, claimed to not know what happened to her, police said in an arrest report.

After Jade's body was found, the Clark County Coroner's Office ruled her death a homicide, caused by multiple stab and incised wounds. Family members said she was stabbed 40 times.

Stokes was subsequently charged for the slaying.

During a preliminary hearing, Stokes' attorney claimed the girl's father should be looked as a suspect because of his criminal history.

Reports, though, surfaced about Stokes' history of violence when she lived in Mississippi. An indictment showed she had been charged for cutting off the genitals of a former boyfriend, according to The Mississippi Press.

Stokes remains in the Clark County Detention Center without bail.
