LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

Las Vegas Metro police released the name of an officer who shot an armed robbery suspect over the weekend.

Police said Officer Daniel Garmendia opened fire on the person after attempting to arrest the man about 4 a.m. on Jan. 6 near Bonanza Road and Maryland Parkway.

According to Metro, Garmendia was one of the officers that were investigating a suspicious vehicle parked in the 2100 block of Sunrise Avenue.

Police recognized one of the people as a suspect in a robbery from last month, Metro said.

As police were attempting an arrest, the vehicle fled and officers pursued. A man and a woman stopped and fled the vehicle on foot in the area of N. 12th Street, police said.

The man fired multiple shots from a handgun, and Garmendia returned fire, police said.

The suspect was injured and taken to an area hospital in critical condition, Metro said. The other suspect, the woman, was later arrested.

According to Metro, Garmendia has been with the department since 2009. He was placed on routine paid administrative leave pending an investigation.
