Fire relief funds sought in annual Red Cross drive

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

The American Red Cross of Southern Nevada provides relief in the form of shelter, food and clothing, among other materials, in times of fire to area residences.

Funding for those materials come from only the organization and no other government agency.

On Friday, the Red Cross plans to launch its 2013 campaign to raise more than $300,000 for its emergency assistance fund.

The campaign called "Fire Hurts…Red Cross Helps" is part of a joint effort between the nonprofit organization and the Professional Fire Fighters of Nevada.

"As professional fire fighters, we respond to fires as they are happening," says Scott Gorgon with the Professional Fire Fighters of Nevada. "The Red Cross comes after the fire is out. The Fire Hurts campaign is a natural partnership with the American Red Cross as we work together to meet the immediate needs of local victims of fires."

According to the Red Cross, volunteers respond to a residential fire every 23 hours, day and night. It says the cost of material assistance to affected families is significant.
