Friday afternoon over 5000 fans packed the MGM Grand Garden Arena to see UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos and challenger Cain Velasquez tip the scales before Saturday's title bout at UFC 155.
"(Cain's) gonna lose this fight, and he's gonna go back to the beginning of the line for sure," dos Santos told FOX5 after the weigh-in.
The champ has the same mindset as many of the 15,000-plus who are expected to attend the bout.
Come for the fight, stay for the New Year's party.
"I'm very focused on my fight, but after the fight, for sure, I know I'm going to celebrate with all these people," said dos Santos.
Reggie Mathis traveled to Las Vegas from Arizona for the holiday weekend, and to her, fight night is the bigger celebration.
"I'm gonna get drunk, root for dos Santos and I'm gonna go shopping after the fight," Mathis said.
New Year's is being treated like the co-main event for Brandon Butorac.
"The fights are probably the highlight of the weekend," Butorac said. "But we're here for eight days all together."
He and six friends will be filling rooms and spending money at the MGM Grand well into next week.
"Yeah it's gambling for the most part, then whatever we've got left we'll throw on the fight," Butorac said.
With UFC fans extended stays, the MGM only has a few rooms available, and anticipates being completely sold out by Monday.
