Residents have been allowed back into their homes after crews cleaned up a gas leak near Tomahawk and Southern.

Apache Junction Fire Department spokesman Dave Montgomery said Hazmat crews from Mesa, Queen Creek and Gilbert fire departments assisted at Harman's Recycling, a scrap metal recycling business, located at 1557 E. 18th Ave.

Montgomery said while they were loading an older, compressed gas cylinder into a bulk scrap bin for shipment to another facility, workers damaged the head of the cylinder and caused an unknown stored gas to leak "profusely."

Fire crews identified the substance as hydrogen sulphide, an extremely flammable and toxic gas.

Montgomery said about 40 nearby residents were evacuated Thursday afternoon. They were allowed back into their homes and businesses about 5 p.m.

No injuries have been reported.
