RENO, Nev. (AP) -- Washoe County sheriff's officials say a man trying to rescue his dog on train tracks near Boomtown has died after he was struck by an Amtrak train.
Deputy Armando Avina says two men were walking the dog Monday afternoon when the animal got too close to the tracks. Avina says the man was struck when he apparently fell through a train trestle onto the tracks near U.S. 40 in the Verdi area.
Authorities say the conductor was not able to stop the train in time.
About 260 passengers were on board at the time. The train's final destination was not immediately known.
