LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -
Despite the heat, members of Nevada's 593rd Transportation Company on Monday morning suited up as Santa and ran a 5K for charity.
The Great Santa Run took place at Camp Phoenix in Afghanistan.
The 593rd, part of the Nevada National Guard, provides transportation support for movement of dry cargo, ammunition and equipment by motor transport. The company also guards assigned areas. It has detachments in Winnemucca and Elko.
"I actually did a 31 (minute) 5K. Considering my age, I think I did pretty good," said Spc. Dennis Mitchell, who hails from Las Vegas.
"After we got in our battle unit, it seemed the unit kind of connected," Mitchell continued. "Everyone's friends with everyone. Coming into the holidays, we're doing pretty good. We miss our families, but because of our unit cohesion, everyone kind of helps everyone out. If someone's down, we pick him up a little bit to help him through the season."
