Thelma Terud describes her empty two-bedroom apartment.
"We had a Christmas tree, TV and that's all we had," said Terud.
Now, the four-bedroom home has received a major upgrade thanks to a family friend named Laura Van Niekerk. Niekerk wrote a letter to Walker Furniture telling them about the family's travels to the United States and how they lost their oldest son while he was serving in Afghanistan.
The company responded and wanted to help the family with their annual "Home for the Holiday" program. It provides furniture free of charge to those in need.
"They are such a deserving family. They have never asked for anything and are so grateful to be together as a family. I thought it would be a wonderful way to honor their son who served for our country [and] to show them how this is a wonderful place to live," said Niekerk.
The improvements were dramatic. The apartment was filled with a dining room table, couches and even some items for the bedrooms.
This is the 19th year Walker Furniture has been helping families in the valley. This year, the family from the island of Palau were one of 28 to receive help.
"I was really surprised that out of so many people, my family was chosen," said Terud.
