Once again this year Walker Furniture is helping some of Las Vegas' needy by giving them some desperately needed furniture.
"There is so much need out there and we're grateful that we are in a position that we can help these families and individuals. There is a lot of hardship out there," said Walker Furniture CEO Larry Alterwitz.
This is the 19th year that Walker has been doing its Home for the Holidays program. Last year, among the families selected were grandparents who are raising four children for their daughter who was murdered by her husband and another family that lost everything in a fire.
Among the first recipients this year was Ronnie Beamon. He and his 4-year-old son were living in an apartment with no furniture and were sleeping on the floor. Beamon can't work because of a heart condition.
"I'm excited today that Walker has chosen us to come and give us furniture," a tearful Beamon said.
After today, his apartment has beds, a living room set and a kitchen table and chairs
Walker receives thousands of requests for help ever year, Alterwitz said.
"Our executive committee has a very though time getting it down to 28 families," he said.
For Beamon, the delivery on Friday was a light at the end of a long tunnel.
"I have a place to sleep, really," he said.
Walker Furniture expected to complete most of the deliveries before Christmas Day with the rest being delivered after the holidays at the recipient's request.
