A former funeral director was arrested Monday after police said he failed to perform services that he was paid for.
Reginald Moody Jr., 49, has been charged with five counts of obtaining property by false pretenses. Police said the arrest was part of an ongoing investigation pertaining to Moody Funeral Home, where Moody was an employee.
This is the second time this year that there has been an arrest involving financial mismanagement at a Sylva funeral home. Earlier this year, Ronnie Riddle, formerly of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home (now Melton Funeral Home), was charged with 13 counts of obtaining property by false pretenses. His wife Thomasine was charged with nine counts of obtaining property by false pretense.
The North Carolina Department of Insurance said that between 1998 and 2009, the Riddles collected approximately $50,000 from those who had pre-paid for burial services, but never submitted policy applications.
Sylva Police Detective Daniel Peoples said the investigation against Moody revealed he had taken money from victims for services that were never rendered. Peoples also said the investigation is ongoing, and there could be more victims in this case, and more charges could be filed at a later date.
This latest arrest marks the latest turn in the history of the now-defunct funeral home. Moody Funeral Home started in Sylva in 1922, but complaints against the funeral home go back to at least 2007. The funeral home closed in December 2011.
Investigators are advising anyone who believes that they were a victim in the Moody case to come forward by calling Sylva police at 828-586-2916.
