Newtown police search for new evidence, information about suspect

NEWTOWN, CT (WFSB) -
The pieces are slowly coming together of how the deadly massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary unfolded, but the search is still on for why this happened.
Adam Lanza, 20, shot and killed his mother as she slept in her bed and then went to the school Friday morning where he proceeded to shoot and kill 20 children, between the ages of 6 and 7, and six adults before shooting himself in the head.
According to officials, Lanza, 20, had hundreds of rounds of unused, especially deadly ammunition that raises the possibility the mass killing could have been much worse, if he was given the chance.
The shooting lasted about 10 minutes.
"I'm just thinking about the victims and families and teachers," said Spencer Dinnean of Redding. "This little quaint town - no one ever thought this was a possibility."
The faces of each child seem to be on everyone's mind. The thoughts, prayers and gifts are growing in this small Connecticut town.
"It's absolutely overwhelming," Dinnean said. "Because what happened is overwhelming."
CBS has learned the first officers arriving spotted Lanza at the end of a hallway ducking from view. It was at that point he used one of the handguns to take his own life.
"We just want to get back to normal as soon as we can," said parent Cathy Austermann.
One big step for parents was supposed to be students at all of the other schools going back. But some sort of threat was made at Head O'Meadow Elementary School, so the principal just canceled for the day.
A letter from the principal sent home to parents Tuesday said:
"As was predicted by the police that there would be some threats, the police were prepared and have us in lockdown, which is our normal procedure. Due to the situation, students will not come to school today. Please make arrangements to keep them home. All-Star has been notified and will return any students already picked up."
Newtown police are investigating the threat.
"Basically, we got an email from the principal an hour before we were supposed to put them on the bus," Austermann said.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is searching gun shops and businesses in the region to see if they have any activity with Nancy and Adam Lanza.
The weapons used in the second-deadliest school shooting in United States history included a Bushmaster AR-15 assault-type weapon with high-capacity magazines, a Glock 10 mm and a Sig Sauer 9 mm.
All of them belonged to his mother, Nancy Lanza.
Adam Lanza had visited numerous shooting ranges and he went with his mother, sources said. Investigators have not found any evidence to suggest the visits to the gun ranges were recent.
Investigators are still looking for leads when talking to local gun providers.
