LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) -

Just after noon on Tuesday, Longview police said they were called to South Ward Elementary at 1011 Mobberly Avenue.

Police tell KLTV a gun was found in a child's backpack. Officials with Longview ISD said it was a handgun. The handgun was confiscated from kindergarten student this afternoon as the campus was dismissing for Winter Break. District officials could not say whether or not the gun was loaded. Longview police said KLTV will have to file an open records request to learn whether or not the gun was loaded.

Longview ISD said the child had no malicious intent to their knowledge. Rather it is believed by police and school personnel that he brought the weapon to school to show off to friends. The gun was not discharged and there were no injuries.

South Ward was never in a lockdown as a result of the discovery, since the gun was immediately confiscated and students had already been dismissed.

We are still working on this story and will have more for you as soon as it becomes available.

Longview police and Longview ISD officials are investigating the incident. Longview ISD said all South Ward parents have been notified of the incident.
