Shooting range patrons react to CT school tragedy

Posted: Updated:

A lot of people start thinking about gun control laws and gun shops when mass shootings happen.

The owner of Stoddard's Range and Guns in Douglasville talked to CBS Atlanta News about how he too feels for the young school children in Newtown, Connecticut.

"Our heart goes out to everybody in Connecticut, for all the hundreds of people affected, and hundred more who will be affected for years to come," Halbreich said.

Halbreich is a trained lawyer turned gun shop owner. He knows it's inevitable that gun shops come under fire whenever there's a mass shooting.

"We can't stop criminals from doing things that violate the law. But we can do everything possible here to support the laws and enforce the laws," Halbreich said.

Customer Brooke Belcher is a gun owner and a local school teacher. She visited the gun range with her husband Don and their 18-year-old daughter Adrea.

"I'm so deeply saddened. I just kept thinking how the other children felt in the building and how scared they must be," Brooke Belcher said.

She told CBS Atlanta News owning a gun is a right and a privilege.

"There's a sense of responsibility that goes hand in hand. You have to be responsible to be a gun owner," Brooke Belcher said.

Over the last five days, Stoddard's have hosted an event called Smith & Wesson Days. But the number of gun sales hasn't been the only thing on the owner's mind.

"We don't think about the business the store is doing. We think about what happened in Connecticut. It's a horrible event. We're sickened by it," Halbreich said.

Stoddard's Range and Guns, like most gun shops, offer training and gun handling courses, and encourage it as well.
