Packed churches pray for shooting victims' families

Posted: Updated:

Church services all over the country were likely a little longer Sunday as millions of people turned to prayer to help them get through the nation's recent tragedy.

It's absolutely tragic. I can't even imagine what the families are going through. We've lost people close to us but the thought of losing a child is absolutely horrific," said Atlanta native James Lewis.

It's left many people feeling helpless, and being hundreds of miles of away here in Atlanta, some did the only thing they could and that's head to church.

"It's a comfort to us to gather together and pray for those families. We have no idea what they're going through and all we can really offer is our prayers," said one woman at the Cathedral.

And by praying for the victims and their families, who are total strangers to most Atlanta residents, some said it proves there is still some good out there.

"To know that people are praying for the families. I think it gives people a feeling of peace that that offering is being made. So it does give me comfort," said Lewis.

At the Impact Worship Center in Smyrna, prayers weren't just for those rocked by the tragedy. They made a special blessing over their kids in hopes that something like this never happens again.

Tanya Jones is with the Impact Worship Center. We just wanted to pray and cover our children. Not just the children that are attending here, but we really wanted to pray for all children across America that the blood of Jesus cover them and they will be safe from all hurt, harm, and danger," said Jones.

Pastors said sending the prayers and thoughts on a Sunday morning is great, but they hope it doesn't stop there.
