A busy Valley shopping complex is on high alert after a store manager shot two robbers who got away. The home consignment center off Eastern and Serene was closed Wednesday. The same store was robbed less than a month ago.
"It's unfortunate," said Gabriel De Leon of Gabriel Jewelers. "They are very good people. We are very good friends. I'm saddened by what happened."
De Leon said he expects the home consignment store to carry a loaded weapon. He said nowadays any store that sells jewelry needs protection.
"You should be armed or prepared for somebody coming into your place of business and not only trying to take your livelihood but your life," said De Leon.
On Tuesday night, the store manager shot at two suspects who tried to rob the store.
"If your life is threatened," said De Leon. "You have to do what it takes to protect yourself."
On Wednesday, Metro was on the hunt for the two men who smashed the jewelry cases with a hammer. Amanda Denniger works at the German Bread Bakery in the same complex. She's shocked the store was robbed again.
"It's scary, really scary," said Denniger. "I didn't think it would happen again especially so soon because it only happened about three weeks ago in the same store. I feel for the manager. I understand why she had a gun."
For now, Denniger feels safe, but she says the bakery may need to be armed if robbers strike again.
Detectives are now looking at surveillance video and collecting evidence to track down the suspects. The home consignment store will reopen on Thursday.
Police found the getaway vehicle abandoned at nearby Boulder Station. It was reported stolen before the attempted robbery.
