Metro police have arrested the 31-year-old mother of the boy whose foot was run over by a Clark County School District bus on Monday morning.
Police said Kimberly Marie Russi's son, the victim, and his slightly older brother were routinely sent to the bus stop without supervision. She has been charged with felony child abuse or neglect with substantial bodily harm for the victim, and one count of child abuse or neglect for her son who was uninjured.
The 6-year-old boy was waiting for his bus on Monday at around 6:40 a.m. at North Las Vegas Boulevard and Walnut Road when he entered the roadway and a bus ran over his right foot.
The child was taken to UMC Trauma Center where he is expected to be OK.
Police said the bus that ran over the child was not his normal bus and that the bus driver was not at fault.
Metro police said there aren't standards for how old a child should be to be left alone because everyone ages and matures differently, but in this case they say the victim and his brother were not fit to care for their own well-being and safety.
"There should be been some form of supervision. And, or some form of assigned guardianship while the child was waiting for the bus driver," Lt. James Weiskopf with Metro Abuse & Neglect said.
They say the children need a guardian until they are on the bus. On the bus the driver is their guardian. Once they arrive at school the officials there become the guardians.
Police warn that when parents who are busy with work or other things and leave their children alone, things do not always go as planned. All kinds of safety issues can come in to play and children cannot be expected to be fully prepared.
Russi is being held in the Clark County Detention Center.
Depending on her prior criminal history she could face one to five years in prison for the felony charge.
Child Protective Services is looking into living situations for the two boys and their other siblings.
