CASS Program Supports Innovative West Oakland Arts Initiatives.

CASS, a metal recycling company, is pleased to announce its support for The Peralta Junction Project–an innovation arts-based program promoting urban space revitalization­–as part of the company’s broader efforts to support pioneering arts initiatives that have wide-reaching impact in the company’s West Oakland community.

In addition to providing support for Peralta Junction, which has transformed a 24,000 square-foot vacant lot into a temporary creative community space filled with art and commerce, CASS has engaged with a range of artists and organizations seeking social change through creative expression, including The Crucible–a West Oakland school for the industrial arts–and Mark Bode who undertook an extensive CASS-funded mural project at CASS’s primary place of operation on Peralta Street in West Oakland.

“We are thrilled to engage with a number of individuals and organizations who are working to bring creative vitality to our West Oakland neighborhood,” said CASS Chief Executive Officer, Edward Kangeter IV, “and who are using their creative talents to foster positive social change.” Kangeter also remarked, “We see a strong connection between the work that we do–recycling metals to ensure a more sustainable future for generations to come–and these innovative programs that tap human creativity to seed a better future for all West Oaklanders.”

CASS Supports a Number of Innovative Arts Initiatives:

• The Peralta Junction Project (http://www.peraltajunction.com) is a temporary program currently installed at the intersection Mandela Parkway and West Grand Avenue, just blocks from CASS’s recycling facility, that melds a retro-carnival art environment and interactive art projects with Oakland-based artisan retailers and food purveyors to create a family-friendly, fun and positive urban experience.
• CASS supports the summer intern program at The Crucible (http://www.thecrucible.org) that provides opportunities for talented West Oakland youth to share their enthusiasm for the industrial arts with their peers. In addition, Kangeter serves on The Crucible’s Board of Directors.
• When faced with recurrent problems of tagging and graffiti at their primary recycling operation, CASS undertook a creative solution, hiring West Oakland muralists Mark Bode to create a 240-foot long mural on the side of the company’s facility on Peralta Street.
