LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

Markiece Palmer and Dina Palmer, the Las Vegas couple charged with abusing and killing Dina Palmer's 7-year-old boy, will remain in jail without bail.

While the criminal case moves forward, it has come to light that someone may have known the child, Roderick "R.J." Arrington Jr., was being abused before he lost his life.

This new information has people wondering if the boy could have been saved. Child Protective Services (CPS) received a call on Nov. 28, reporting that the child was being abused. He died at University Medical Center the next day. Now, the Clark County Department of Family Services is investigating.

"I wish whoever called… I don't understand why they (CPS) didn't go and investigate it immediately," said the child's grandmother, Latanza Harris.

"It startled me - that's just not my daughter," Harris continued. "It's not what I witnessed, and they lived with me."

In a statement, Clark County's Department of Family Services said, "We are cooperating fully with Metro's investigation and are conducting a complete review and investigation into this matter."

During a court appearance on Thursday, Dina Palmer couldn't hide her tears as prosecutors said her son's injuries had been recurring for months.

There is also a police report out of Illinois that alleges Dina Palmer abused her son a few years ago in public. Prosecutors are now considering adding torture to the list of charges against the couple.

"She made the admission that she felt physical punishment was appropriate, and if (her son) didn't like it, essentially it was (his) problem," the prosecutor said.

Harris is planning to bury her grandson in Illinois on Saturday. The family is in need of donations to cover funeral expenses. If you'd like to help, you may call the Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church at 309-828-2571.

The couple will next appear in court for a preliminary hearing on Jan. 18.
