LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

A Las Vegas judge denied bail Thursday for a couple accused in the death of their 7-year-old child.

A judge in Las Vegas Justice Court also set a Jan. 18, 2013 preliminary hearing date for Dina and Markiece Palmer.

The two were charged with abuse, neglect and murder in connection to the death of Roderick "R.J." Arrington, Jr.

According to Las Vegas Metro police, Markiece, who was R.J.'s stepfather, admitted to striking the boy with his belt and shaking him. R.J's mother Dina also admitted to striking the child, police said.

In an arrest report, Markiece Palmer told police the boy, after being struck by the belt, ran down a flight of stairs, slipped and hit his head on a table before falling backwards on the floor.

According to Metro, R.J. was unresponsive when he was admitted to the hospital. R.J. succumbed to his injuries on Nov. 30.

Dina, in the police report, said R.J. would be given "whoopins" in the past for things like failing to complete homework and failing to read Bible passages.

Both Metro and Child Protective Services report they have no prior history with the couple.

Both remain at Clark County Detention Center.
