A rash of golf and maintenance cart thefts in and around the Prescott Golf and Country Club in Dewey has continued for a second straight month, the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office said.
Some of the cart thefts originated in the nearby Quailwood subdivision of Prescott Valley and involve suspects dumping the stolen carts on PCC property.
The latest incident happened between last Saturday evening and Sunday morning. Suspects cut the fence surrounding the club's storage yard and stole an electric maintenance cart. The cart was later found in the Aqua Fria riverbed adjacent to Quailwood Estates.
On Sunday, deputies received a call that neighbors in the area of 10900 block of Singletree Trail in the club reported seeing two suspicious men at about 5:30 a.m. near their homes. One resident found his fence had been recently damaged. Deputies said they believe the suspects were involved in all the thefts.
One of the suspects is described as about 6' tall. He was last seen wearing a dark blue jacket and a black stocking cap. He displayed a knife sheath on his right thigh. The second suspect was described as slightly shorter. He was wearing dark clothes, including a jacket. Sheriff's investigators did recover evidence from the area, including burglary tools.
In another incident reported to YCSO on Nov. 10, suspects cut away chain-link fencing surrounding the PCC golf course maintenance yard and stole an electric utility cart.
The cart was later found some distance away on the golf course. In another incident a week earlier, a cart from the Quailwood Greens Golf Course was found behind a home in the PCC.
As recently as Nov. 21, YCSO and Prescott Valley police handled the theft and recovery of several carts in these communities. Authorities believe the crimes are likely occurring during the late night/early morning hours.
Deputies said they believe suspects are starting the carts with duplicate keys because owners have not been leaving keys in the ignition. Carts have been found with structural damage from being ridden off-road and the greens are being damaged by being driven on while frosted over.
Authorities said the crimes constitute serious felony charges of theft of transportation, trespassing and criminal damage. Suspects could also lose driving privileges if convicted.
YCSO is seeking the public's help to report suspicious activity in these community areas. People with any information that can lead to the identity of the suspect or suspects should contact YCSO at 928-771-3260 or Yavapai Silent Witness at 1-800-932-3232.
