LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -
Authorities believe speed was a factor in a single-vehicle wreck that killed a driver in east Las Vegas.
Las Vegas Metro police reported the incident on Ridgedale Avenue, east of Ferndale Street, about 11:30 p.m. Monday.
According to investigators, a 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix was traveling eastbound on Ridgedale at a high rate of speed through the intersection at Ferndale.
Police said the vehicle's undercarriage scraped the asphalt, causing the car to rotate counter-clockwise and run off the road.
The vehicle struck residential walls in the area before coming to rest near the south curb, Metro said.
The 45-year-old driver of the Grand Prix died at the scene while the passenger – 34-year-old Armando Esteva-Ortiz – was transported to Sunrise Hospital with minor injuries.
The Clark County Coroner's office is expected to disclose the driver's name.
As of this incident, Metro has investigated 99 traffic-related fatalities this year.
