HENDERSON, NV (FOX5) -

Developers broke ground Tuesday to begin work on one of two Las Vegas valley water parks scheduled to open in time for the beginning of next summer.

Plans call for Cowabunga Bay to be situated near Galleria Drive and Gibson Road, just east of the U.S. 95 freeway, in Henderson.

Developers for the park bought land there for $4.6 million. The parcel is owned by businessman Shane Huish, who already owns a water park of the same name in Draper, Utah.

Huish is partnering with company Vegas Residential, LLC for the Henderson park.

Cowabunga Bay's groundbreaking is the latest step forward in the Las Vegas valley's "water race" between competing parks.

Wet ‘N Wild Las Vegas has already begun construction at Fort Apache and Warm Springs roads.

In October, developers announced a name change from the park's original "Splash Canyon," with additional partners in tow and bigger enhancements planned.

The additional partners include tennis champion and Las Vegas resident Andre Agassi and Karen Thomas of the Thomas and Mack family.

Wet ‘N Wild's price tag comes in at about $50 million.

Both parks are aiming for a Memorial Day 2013 launch date, just in time for the start of next summer.
