Victory Lap Parade highlights Champion's Week

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

Inside the ballroom at Encore Thursday for NASCAR's NMPA Meyers Brothers awards luncheon, Dale Earnhardt Jr. won his 10th straight Most Popular Driver award.

He was humbled by it.

"I thank the fans, all the fans that support this sport," Earnhardt said.

Jeff Gordon was close to tears after winning the prestigious Meyers Brothers Lifetime Achievement Award.

"I've seen this event, this award, go to legends of our sport," he said, choked up, from the podium.

After the luncheon and interviews with the media, the main event of Thursday's Champion's Week events awaited outside - the Victory Lap parade.

Las Vegas Boulevard was closed to traffic for about 30 minutes as the top 12 drivers of the year were allowed to drive their race cars on the famous stretch of asphalt.

"I'd have to say one of the favorite things to do out there is donuts on The Strip," said five-time champion Jimmie Johnson.

Drivers did donuts at Spring Mountain Road and Harmon Avenue, with a two-tire pit stop in front of the Bellagio.

Friday is the final day of Champion's Week.  The drivers will attend the 2012 Sprint Cup Series Awards Banquet at the Wynn.
