"The Jewish Federation of Las Vegas expresses its deep dismay at the UN General Assembly vote today awarding the Palestinian Authority non-member observer status. The UN vote is regrettable and a distraction from efforts to bring about direct negotiations with Israel which is the only path to a legitimate and lasting peace.
"Today's UN vote will only undermine efforts to achieve peace in the Middle East. By taking unilateral steps at the UN today, the Palestinian Authority broke with the historic Oslo Accords reached with Israel in 1994, and instead bypassed obligatory negotiations on core issues in favor of a symbolic political gesture.
"Israel, the United States and the Quartet have asserted time and again that the only way to peace is through direct negotiations between the parties; not unilateral steps at the United Nations.
"We call on the Palestinian Authority to heed requests by Israel and the United States to return to the negotiating table with Israel and work towards a peace solution that guarantees safe and defensible borders for Israel and a viable Palestinian state."
