Former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords was in the Valley Tuesday to accept a very special award.
Giffords and her husband, retired Captain Mark Kelly, were honored as the 2012 Shirley Agnos Legacy Award recipients.
Giffords was given a standing ovation as she headed up on the stage to accept the award from the Arizona Town Hall.
"Thank you for the award, I appreciate (it) very much," Giffords said.
Giffords and Kelly said a in statement, "Shirley Agnos is a pioneer for change in our state... and it's an honor to be in her company."
Earlier this month, Jared Loughner was sentenced to life in prison for killing six people and wounding many more, including Giffords while she was holding a rally in Tucson in January 2011.
