Baltimore, MD (PRWEB) November 27, 2012

The physicians at the Maryland Laser, Skin and Vein Institute are now offering MelaFind, an innovative medical device for early melanoma detection. Melafind, developed by medical device company MELA Sciences, is a first-of-its-kind technology that is used during a skin examination to help the physicians at MDLSV see under the skin’s surface to examine atypical moles in more detail. The device painlessly scans as deep as 2.5 mm below the skin surface, non-invasively using computer vision technology to assess for cancerous mole changes.

MelaFind’s safety and effectiveness were proven in the largest clinical trial in melanoma detection ever conducted. MelaFind has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for use in the US. In addition, MelaFind has received CE Mark approval and is approved for use in the European Union.

“We are excited to offer MelaFind to our patients as a clinically validated, objective system to help in deciding whether or not to biopsy atypical moles,” says Dr. Weiss. “Everyone is at potential risk of melanoma, and having the MelaFind device helps up to detect melanomas at the earliest, most curable stages.”

Based in Hunt Valley (Baltimore), MD, the MDLSV Institute not only treats thousands of patients per year, but is a leading clinical research facility investigating new skin treatments and devices for the purposes of FDA clearance and improving patient treatments and outcomes.
