Family mourns hiker who fell to death

Posted: Updated:

An outdoor trip turned deadly over the weekend as 31-year-old Nathan McKinney died while hiking.

"Get away, go hiking and just get away and do something different. We had a great time. He beat us all the way to the top," said Justin Strong, the victim's brother.

A family picture, taken in the Calico Basin at Red Rock Canyon, would be the last memory this Las Vegas family would have of McKinney. As the group began to climb down, Nathan took a separate path on his own.

"He was by himself and he slipped," added Strong.

Within a short time after separating from each other, family members began to search for McKinney. Metro police arrived to help, but McKinney had already died.

"These pictures should be in an album not spread out in a table. These are our great moments and fun times. It's very difficult to see his unfinished artwork that he was still working on that his pen was still attached to," said Serenity Contreras, the victim's sister.

Pictures have now become the family treasure, while Nathan McKinney's memory will live in his family's heart forever.

"If you could see the inside you would truly know what we were feeling," added Contreras.

A bank account with Wells Fargo has been setup under Nathan McKinney's name.

The account number is 3549385577.
