Hospitalized Las Vegans enjoying special Thanksgiving

Posted: Updated:

Once again this year, some valley residents are getting the chance to spend quality time at home with hospitalized family members, thanks to private ambulance service American Medical Response (AMR).

For 10 years now, AMR has been bringing patients home during Thanksgiving and Christmas as part of its Home for the Holidays program.

"We do it all day long, between whatever hours they want," said AMR's Damon Schilling.

This year as many as a dozen families got to reunite at home for Thanksgiving.

"It will be really nice being able to share this with her," said Bob Bates, whose mother Lee Bates has lived in a nursing home since May.

Lee Bates spent several hours at her son's home surrounded by family.

"It's good, very nice," she said, breaking down in tears.

"We pretty much try to get to spend time with her as much as we can but this being able to have her here is nice," said Bob Bates.

While the program is designed for the families, ambulance technicians enjoy participating.

"It's always nice to see the genuine look on their face, the pure happiness when we walk in and they get to see their family for the first time, and that's something that actually lights us up and changes our demeanor for the rest of the day," said Schilling

The next time AMR will do their Home for the Holiday's program will be Christmas Day.
