Thanksgiving eve brings record pizza, liquor sales

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

The most popular pie on Thanksgiving eve isn't apple, cherry or banana cream. It's pizza pie.

Terry Spillane is general manager of one of Pizza Hut's 41 locations in the Las Vegas valley. He estimates his restaurant will go through 200 pounds of cheese, 75 pounds of pepperoni and 150 pounds of chicken wings on the day before Thanksgiving.

Wednesday is one of the top five days for ordering pizza each year because families don't want to cook two nights in a row.

"Basically, when they have other families coming in, we've got people ordering eight, 10, 12 pizzas," said Spillane. "We get some really big orders."

Extra delivery drivers called in to work Wednesday make some extra tips because of all the stops.

"We're in and out of the store non-stop," said driver Nick Lopez.

For Dana Weant, who had her pizza delivered, she gets a bit of a breather before cooking a Thanksgiving meal for 10 people starting at 5 a.m. on Thursday.

"It relieves a lot of the stress that Thanksgiving will have when it comes to cooking," Weant said.

Liquor stores are enjoying the same kind of sales boost too.

Lee's Discount Liquor ranks Wednesday as the third most popular day of the year to buy booze.

"They're picking up their wine, and it'll continue right through Thanksgiving Day," said Scott Hanning of Lee's. "It is our busiest holiday day. We're much busier on Thanksgiving Day than Christmas or New Year's Day."
