LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

The Clark County Board of Commissioners denied a special use permit that would have allowed an owner of chimps to keep the animals in a southwest Las Vegas neighborhood.

The special land-use permit was up for consideration during the Board's meeting on Thursday.

At issue was the renewal of a license that would have allowed Mike Casey to keep small chimps at his property. Casey also runs an attraction operated at the residence called Great Ape Experience.

Opponents of the permit Thursday said they were concerned about public safety, especially with new homes being built near the property where the chimps were being housed.

The issue of safety was a point brought up following the escape of two chimpanzees in a northwest Las Vegas neighborhood.

Other opponents contended humane reasons for the keeping of the chimps.

During the meeting, Commissioner Steve Sisolak recommended a 30-day period for the owner to move the chimps out of the area.

Commissioner Tom Collins appeared to be a dissenting vote in the permit denial. He offered help to Casey in moving the animals into a new district within the area.
