LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

More than 700 volunteers are needed to participate in a one-day, large-scale effort to help the homeless in southern Nevada.

Organizers for Project Homeless connect said more than 700 volunteers will be needed to help clients around the one-stop event set for the Cashman Center on Thursday, Dec. 6.

Volunteers will be looked upon to escort the homeless at the event, work the check-in table, and help with post-event cleanup, among many functions.

Organizers also urged for the community to donate items for distribution such as tee shirts, socks and water. They also encouraged monetary donations.

The one-day project is being aimed to help the thousands of homeless living in the Las Vegas-area with "hand-up" rather than a handout, organizers added.

Last year's event saw more than 700 volunteers help more than 3,000 homeless people receive help with food, clothing, grooming, housing, transportation, job readiness, health care, mental health counseling, substance abuse treatment, child care, veterans and legal services.

Volunteers are needed from 7 a.m. until 4 p.m. on the day of the event, but half-day volunteers will also be considered.

The event itself is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
