Las Vegas prepares for busy travel weekend

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

AAA says more than 3.2 million people in the Mountain West region, including Las Vegas, will travel at least 50 miles this Thanksgiving weekend, one the busiest four-day travel periods of the year.

If you're going by car, it's important to do some preventative maintenance first.

"Basically do an overall check," said Christine Nichols of Henderson Hyundai. "Check the tires, check the belts, the fluids, the battery. The once over."

Gas prices have dropped just more than 5 cents in the last week, but they're still 7 cents higher than this time last year.

For people flying, the addition of terminal three has changed McCarran Airport's set up for many airlines.

"We're gonna have a lot of first-time local travelers during the Thanksgiving and Christmas season who aren't familiar with terminal three because they haven't been here since it's opened," said Randall Walker, Clark County Director of Aviation.

It's important to make sure to check your terminal before you go to the airport because 20 percent of passengers that used to fly out of terminal one are now in terminal three.

If you're just picking someone up at the airport, a new touch will make life easier at passenger pick up, where they've numbered columns at both terminals.

"So it'll be very easy," Walker said. "You can tell whoever is picking you up, pick me up at column No. 10. I'll be standing by column 10. The numbers are very large."

McCarran says flights will be 90 to 100 percent full this week so plan on arriving early because if you miss your flight, the chances of rebooking are slim.
