A Las Vegas man has been charged in connection to a slaying that took place in March of this year.

According to the District Attorney's office, 21-year-old Akeem Tripp was booked into the Clark County Detention Center on a charge of first degree murder.

In a Las Vegas Metro police warrant affidavit, Tripp was suspected of shooting 29-year-old Phillip Hooks at an apartment complex in the 5200 block of E. Stewart Avenue on March 4.

Hooks was being treated at University Medical Center until his death on April 7.

According to the affidavit, Hooks was shot multiple times, including once in the head.

As described in the affidavit, police said Hooks was shot several hours after he had gotten in an altercation with an ex-girlfriend.

Tripp was connected to the shooting due to him being involved, at the time, with Hooks' ex, according to police.

Tripp, though, initially denied his involvement with the shooting and told police he was elsewhere when the shooting happened, according to the affidavit.

Police said it was not until Tripp told a neighbor about the murder that he was suspected in the slaying.

In the affidavit, Tripp, in October, admitted to the neighbor about confronting Hooks at his apartment complex, some time after the altercation with the ex-girlfriend.

In the affidavit, police said, the neighbor told officers Hooks turned around from Tripp, at which point, Tripp pulled a gun.

Hooks was shot seven times in the incident, police said.

An arrest warrant was executed on Nov. 7, according to the affidavit.
